Surgical techniques in epilepsy

In our Epilepsy Unit resective surgery procedures are performed, aimed at the cure of epilepsy, and palliative procedures that seek to reduce the frequency and severity of the seizures. The first ones seek the resection of the focus that originates epilepsy and require a high level of surgical training. The latter comprise the disconnection surgeries intended to isolate the epileptogenic focus from the rest of the brain and those from brain neuromodulation such as the Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS) or Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS).

Other procedures such as electrothermocoagulation may be palliative or curative but are under evaluation.

In the chart below (provided by the Bonn Epilepsy Clinic) you can observe the various techniques of resective surgery and disconnection used in neurosurgery.
