Ketogenic diet

The ketogenic diet, a diet rich in fat and low in carbohydrates, is a good non-pharmacological treatment option in refractory epilepsy. Its name is due to ketone bodies that increase in blood and urine in the patient who is receiving this diet. Known since the beginning of the last century for its anticonvulsive effects only few years ago has also demonstrated its effectiveness and safety in children.

Several studies now support its beneficial effects in reducing the number of seizures, but none of them has come to know the mechanisms by which this diet has anticonvulsive effects.
