Monitoring and Surgery

The unit has four beds for extended video-EEG monitoring and is equipped with 128-channel and 256-channel acquisition systems that can record up 16 kHz of sampling rate. More than 130 evaluations are carried out per year for both children and adults. The candidates come from Catalonia and Spain.

In 2013, the Epilepsy Unit was a pioneer in the use of robotic surgery for epilepsy in Spain. More than 15 implantations with deep electrodes using the technique of Stereo-electroencephalography (SEEG) are performed per year, making our unit one of the centers with more experience accumulated in Spain using this technique. The number of complex epilepsy surgeries has increased significantly in recent years.

In addition, the Epilepsy Unit attains the highest technology standards in neuroimaging that scale up to pioneering postprocessing procedures to MRI. With these methodologies it is possible to locate possible epileptic foci that can be studied through invasive recordings. We also accumulated high experience in the interpretation of tests such as functional MRI for  memory and motor functions. Specific focus localization studies such as PET-MRI, PET-SPM, ictal-interictal SPECT / SISCOM are also performed.

Number of prolonged V-EEG monitoring (5 to 10 days) performed during the last 3 years.

Number of epilepsy surgeries per year (blue) and invasive studies (red).

Surgical results of the last 3 years.
