Awareness of this fact may provide anaesthesiologists with increased control over the procedure, allow them to carry it out more safely and allow for more accurate dosage of anaesthetics. The study, which has been published by the journal Sleep, was carried out with healthy volunteers who underwent neuroimaging tests to assess the brain's reaction during the anaesthetic procedure. Researchers have been able to determine the exact moment in which the cerebral cortex and brain stem go out of sync, namely, when loss of consciousness is achieved.

The bachelor's degree will have a new syllabus, fully adapted to the needs of medicine today and in the future that will involve a change in the methods and approach of teaching, with a clear clinical leaning due to its integration with Hospital del Mar. One of the distinguishing features of the bachelor's degree in Medicine is its location in a unique bio-health environment, formed by the Mar University Campus, Hospital del Mar and the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park. Aspects of current medicine will be the focus, such as cancer, infectious diseases, care for the critically ill, personalized and precision medicine, systems medicine and telemedicine.

Family members of patients who follow an intensive weight loss programme, planned within the PREDIMED study, also lose weight and improve their commitment to the Mediterranean diet. Despite not participating in the programme, these people had lost an average of almost four kilos, two years after their family member started the programme. This was particularly true in cases where they shared meals and the patient did the cooking. The same contagion effect was not observed with regard to physical activity among patients and their families. The patients also experienced improved weight loss, of almost seven kilos over the same period. The results of the study have been published in the International Journal of Obesity.

A study by physicians and researchers at Hospital del Mar, the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute and Pompeu Fabra University has shown that patients infected with SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus with lower blood zinc levels require a longer recovery time and are at higher risk of death. Mortality in this patient group was 21% compared to 5% of those with higher levels of zinc in the blood. At the same time, the study has carried out in vitro tests which demonstrated the protective effect of this element by limiting the spread of the coronavirus in human cells. The researchers draw attention to the benefits of zinc supplementation for patients with covid-19 to speed up their recovery and to risk groups to limit the severity of its effects. The study has just been published in the journal Nutrients and was one of the highlights of the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases' conference on covid-19.12th February 2021 - Press notes
The Hospital del Mar is the promoter of the Phase 2 study that will assess the antiviral efficacy of compound E-52862, produced by ESTEVE, in the early treatment of outpatients with mild COVID-19 symptoms.

The worsened mental health and mood of elderly people at risk of developing dementia, caused by the lockdown measures, was prolonged during the early weeks of de-escalation. The study, led by researchers from the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute and doctors from Hospital del Mar, in collaboration with the Barcelona βeta Brain Research Center, a research centre affiliated with the Pasqual Maragall Foundation, has been published in the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease. New technologies were used to monitor the participants and understand the impact of lockdown. The people who took part are part of the PIENSA study on the prevention of cognitive deterioration in stages prior to the onset of dementia.

In an article published in the journal World Psychiatry, leading experts in this field recommend the approach implemented in the Barcelona centre. One of the authors of the article is Dr. Marta Torrens, Director of the Addiction Process group in the Neuropsychiatry and Addictions Institute at Hospital del Mar. Patients with a dual diagnosis are those who suffer an addiction to a substance of abuse in addition to another psychiatric disorder. The authors of the article advise authorities and organisations to adopt a multidisciplinary approach that will allow an early diagnosis of this comorbidity, and to pay particular attention to minors living with these patients.

The MAPBM (Maturity Assessment Model for Patient Blood Management) project makes it easier for hospitals to adjust transfusions and is the key to properly managing hospital blood reserves at a time when donations are falling sharply as a result of measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19. In five years, this project, promoted by the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute, has already reached around sixty hospitals in Spain. This success demonstrates the feasibility of implementing the model and making it a tool for improving both patient safety and outcomes, according to a study just published in the journal Blood Transfusion. Hospital del Mar stands out in this field and has been awarded at the annual meeting of the hospitals participating in the project as the center without cardiac surgery with the best results.
