Hospital del Mar’s dual diagnosis care model is validated by experts from the UN and WHO

Hospital del Mar’s dual diagnosis care model is validated by experts from the UN and WHO In an article published in the journal World Psychiatry, leading experts in this field recommend the approach implemented in the Barcelona centre. One of the authors of the article is Dr. Marta Torrens, Director of the Addiction Process group in the Neuropsychiatry and Addictions Institute at Hospital del Mar. Patients with a dual diagnosis are those who suffer an addiction to a substance of abuse in addition to another psychiatric disorder. The authors of the article advise authorities and organisations to adopt a multidisciplinary approach that will allow an early diagnosis of this comorbidity, and to pay particular attention to minors living with these patients.

The importance of implementing a Transfusion Adjustment Programme in hospitals at the height of the COVID-19 epidemic

The importance of implementing a Transfusion Adjustment Programme in hospitals at the height of the COVID-19 epidemic The MAPBM (Maturity Assessment Model for Patient Blood Management) project makes it easier for hospitals to adjust transfusions and is the key to properly managing hospital blood reserves at a time when donations are falling sharply as a result of measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19. In five years, this project, promoted by the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute, has already reached around sixty hospitals in Spain. This success demonstrates the feasibility of implementing the model and making it a tool for improving both patient safety and outcomes, according to a study just published in the journal Blood Transfusion. Hospital del Mar stands out in this field and has been awarded at the annual meeting of the hospitals participating in the project as the center without cardiac surgery with the best results.

Some of the principal treatments for osteoporosis could reduce the incidence of COVID-19

Some of the principal treatments for osteoporosis could reduce the incidence of COVID-19 A joint study by physicians at Hospital del Mar, researchers from the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute, Pompeu Fabra University and the Pere Virgili Health Care Park suggests that certain drugs used to treat this condition are safe for COVID-19 patients and could even have a protective effect. The results support the recommendations of the scientific guidelines relating to the desirability of maintaining treatments for osteoporosis in patients with COVID-19. This is the first study of its kind in the world. It has just been published in the journal Aging.

Following physical activity recommendations can reduce mortality risk by 16%

Following physical activity recommendations can reduce mortality risk by 16% A study by researchers from Hospital del Mar and the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute reveals the protective effect that 30 minutes of moderate physical activity per day can have, as recommended by the World Health Organisation. Multiplying this figure by four maximises the benefit, but, beyond this, there is no additional benefit. The study, published by the Revista Española de Cardiología (Spanish Journal of Cardiology), has been monitoring over 11,000 people for more than 7 years.

Hospital del Mar researchers reveal which benign breast disease is most likely to develop into cancer

Hospital del Mar researchers reveal which benign breast disease is most likely to develop into cancer Benign breast diseases (BBD), which are non-cancerous disorders of the breast, such as lumps, are known to increase the chances of subsequent breast cancer. Now a team of Hospital del Mar researchers have found that the way BBD is detected as part of a national screening programme is an indication of which are more likely to become cancerous.

This discovery may provide new treatment strategies and therapeutic targets for important diseases such as cancer or Alzheimer's

The research group of GPCR Drug Discovery at the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute (IMIM), in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology in Kanpur, has deciphered how nature adjusts the response of the human cell to abundant extracellular stimuli (e.g., smell, taste, light, hormones, etc.).

New tool for studying one of the most basic elements in drug success

New tool for studying one of the most basic elements in drug success The results of the study, published in Nature Methods, may facilitate the development of new drugs related to diseases such as cancer and Alzheimer's. The new tool provides access to a large number of atomic-level simulations, the most basic, of the behaviour of a crucial element in almost all human physiological responses. This work is the result of a study by a consortium of international research centres led by scientists at the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute, in collaboration with Pompeu Fabra University and the Paul Scherrer Institute in Switzerland, and with the support of the Autonomous University of Barcelona.
